“Would I Lie to You?” by Eurythmics (1985)
Would I lie to you? ” is not just a question, it’s also a Great Song!
Eurhythmics’ Dave Stewart was trying to create a “killer R&B riff” to use on a song for their 1985′ “Be Yourself Tonight” album, and it finally came to him one morning during breakfast, but when he played it for Annie Lennox, she was worried that it didn’t fit their “sound.”
The solution: They changed their sound from Euro-Pop to a smoking hot hybrid of Rock, Rhythm & Blues.
With that decided , Annie wrote the lyrics from the perspective of an angry girlfriend who walks out on her cheating lover.
Naturally, some people believed she was singing about Dave…but in reality, it was about the breakup of her first marriage, to Radha Raman.
“Would I Lie to You?” was a hit in 14 countries, including the US, where it appeared near the top of FOUR Billboard Charts: #2 on the Rock Chart, #5 on The Hot 100 and Dance Club Charts, and #14 on the Dance Singles Chart.
It was definitely a Great Song of 1985! Hey…would I lie to you? 🙂
