“Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” by Whitney Houston (1988)
This not only a Great Song of 1988, but a bona-fide record breaker!
“Where Do Broken Hearts Go” topped Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary Charts, making it her SEVENTH #1 in a row…breaking the record of 6 shared by The Beatles and Bee Gees–a record that still stands today! And f(or the record, it also reached #2 on the Rhythm & Blues Chart.)
That’s all kinds of impressive, but believe it or not, Whitney had to be talked into recording it! She felt the song was too shallow to be taken seriously…but luckily Clive Davis, the owner of her record label, Arista, and one of he most well-respected hitmakers in the business, convinced her otherwise.
Interesting tidbit: The video (Below) caused a stir amongst black audiences because her love interest (although somewhat ambiguous) appeared to be white. Many thought it signaled a move away from her roots as a black artist.
Be that as it may, “Where Do Broken hearts Go” was–and- still is–a Great Song of 1988 on its own musical merit alone.
