“We Don’t need Another Hero” by Tina Turner (1985)
1985 saw the release of “Mad Max Thunderdome,” the third film in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max film franchise…and with it, came “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner.
Tina starred in the film (along with Mel Gibson), so it was a foregone conclusion that she would record SOMETHING for the soundtrack. “We Don’t Need Another Hero” played over the closing credits, and the power ballad was an obvious choice for single release.
Tina was already on a hot streak in the aftermath of her 1984 “Private Dancer” album, and “Hero” caught fire almost immediately. It charted in 20 countries, including the U-S, where it appeared on FIVE Billboard Charts: The Hot 100 at (#2), The Adult Contemporary and Rhythm & Blues Charts at #3), The Dance Club Chart at (#23) and The Mainstream Rock Chart at #29.
The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammys. Then, in 1986, it received the Ivor Novello Awards for Best Contemporary Song and Best Film Theme or Song. (Note: The Ivors are are awarded in the UK for songwriting and composing excellence.)
So It’s pretty obvious that “We Don’t Need Another Hero” doesn’t need another accolade to prove that it’s a Great Song of 1985!
