These Eyes by The Guess Who (1968)
Until 1968, The Guess Who was pretty much a hard rock Canadian group that rarely crossed the border with hit records…but that all changed…when Randy Bachman came up with a ballad called “These Arms.” Lead singer Burton Cummings changed the title to “These EYES”, and tinkered with the lyrics and middle 8.
But even after those changes, they both thought “These Eyes:” was too soft for The Guess Who.Still, it was added it to their “Wheatfield Soul” album and released as a single.
To their surprise, It reached #7 on The Canadian Top 10, but now there was a NEW problem:The group had no distribution deal to release the song in the US.
Enter Rosalie Trombley, the Music Director at influential radio station l CKLW in Windsor, Ontario…across the river from Detroit.
Rosalie knew a hit when she heard one–and with her record industry connections in both countries, she was able to get the Guess Who the deal they needed.
Before long, ‘\These Eyes’ was being heard everywhere in The US…and reached #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100. making it a Great Song of 1968 in Both Countries!
