Super Trouper by ABBA (1980
ThisĀ Great Song of the ’80’s was named after a stage lighting system. That’s right! Super troupers are those massive spotlights that can light up a whole stadium during concerts and events.
Ā The song, however, takes an interesting turn…with lyrics about how the bright lights of stardom can shine a little too brightly on the lives and well being of those who choose to live under them.
ABBA was never fond of touring—so it’s understandable that the the song was written by Benny and Bjorn after a long, hard tour.
Anni-frid appears to be upbeat as she sings lead, and yet, there’s a subtle, but definite twinge of sadness mixed in.
Even less subtle, is the video–which you can watch by clicking theĀ link below. It features a circus theme…because, after all, Fame can be a three ring circus..right?!
The song was a hit in EIGHTEEN countries, including the US….where it topped Billboard’s Dance Club Chart and reached #14 on The Adult Contemporary Chart.
And here’s a Fun Fact:: The song’s working title was “Blinka Lilla Stjarna,” which is Swedish for “Twinkle Little Star!”
Super Trouper” by Abba: more than just a great lighting system–it’s a Great Song of 1980!
