Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane (1967)

Before  Jefferson Airplane, there was a group called The Great Society, whose frontman was a man named Darby Slick. Darby wrote “”Somebody to Love” as a cautionary tale about how free love could lead to jealousy, but  with loyalty and monogamy, true love could conquer all!
He then handed it over  to his bandmate and Sister-in-Law–Grace Slick–who recorded it for The Great Society, But Grace soon left the group to join the newly formed Jefferson Airplane…and took the song with her.
The Airplane’s version was far more intense–with Grace REALLY smokin’ on the vocals… possibly in more ways than one.
Cashbox magazine nailed it with their review, calling it a “bright, pulsating, rhythmic, sometimes-frenetic, funky rock outing…and the  song was an instant  hit -not just in the counterculture Streets of San Francisco, but nationwide…climbing to #5 on The Hot 100…and later spending several years on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of all time! — Mike Cook
