“Should Have Known Better” by Richard Marx (1987)
When Richard Marx began his solo career, his first SEVEN singles reached the Top 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100!
This week, we’re highlighting the second of those 7: 1987’s “Should Have Known Better.”
Before Richard married actress Cynthia Rhodes (0f “Dirty Dancing fame) in 1989 , he went through a relationship that exploded with a whole lot of drama.
In his words, “We were both young, and she pitted me against another guy against without either of us knowing. It was all about her. She handled the whole situation wrong and people got hurt.’
The bright side: Richard was able to take that hurt and turn it into something positive: “Should Have Known Better” reached #3 on The Hot 100, and #6 on The Rock Chart.. It was a Great Song of 1987–the second of MANY Great solo Songs by Richard Marx! There is a sad footnote to the story, however: Richard and Cynthia divorced in 2014.Â
