“Secret Lovers” by Atlantic Starr (1985)
Here’s a song that you’ve got to admit is not only pretty…but pretty darn pretty shameless.
Yes, “Secret Lovers” by Atlantic Starr is a love song…but it’s sung by a couple who are both cheating on their spouses.
They are well aware that it’s wrong…but they seem to be enjoying themselves too much to stop.
And besides, they suggest that maybe their spouses are cheating as well, and that makes it all okay. Right??
It sounds like a soap opera plot…but in the hands–or should I say–vocals of Atlantic Starr’s Barbara Weathers and David Lewis, it sounds so innocent. Or maybe not.
When “Secret Lovers” was released as a single from the album “As the Band Turns,” it jumped right to the top of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart, and #4 on the Black Singles Chart.
And here’s an Interesting Tidbit: The video was shot without backing from their label A&M Records, which had just dropped them due to poor sales. Oops.
“Secret Lovers:” : Pretty Shameless, Shamelessly Pretty and a Great Song of 1985!
