“Out of Touch” by Hall & Oates (1984-85)

Ignoring the recent breakup and animosity between Daryl Hall and John Oates, let’s go back to better days–1984-85 to be exact–for a Great Song that could accurately billed as Oates and Hall.

John was in the studio playing around with a new synthesizer, when he came up with a riff he thought had that soulful “Philadelphia Sound:” something that might work for The Stylistics.

He finished writing the chorus, and the next day, when John played it for a producer, he was told it sounded more like a Hall and Oates hit…so Daryl was called in, and together, they wrote the rest of the lyrics to “Out of Touch.”

Turns out, that unnamed producer was right…it WAS a Hall and Oates hit–and a BIG ONE!

In late 1984, when the single was released from the album “Big Bam, Boom,” it charted in 11 countries…including, of course, the US, . where it became an amazing FIVE-Chart Hit in early ’85: #1 on the Hot 100 and Dance Club Charts, #8 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, #18 on the Rock Chart, and #24 on the Hip-Hop Chart! It was their 14th consecutive Top 40 hit since 1980!

“Out of Touch:” written by Oates and Hall, and sung by Hall and Oates Thanks to a producer who was “IN touch,” it became a Great Song of 1984-85!
