“One More Try” by George Michael (1988)
George Michael was a sensitive man, and much of his music reflected it. 1988’s “One More Try” is a prime example. It’s autobiographical, but at the same time, non-specific.
In George’s words: “It’s “about my attitude coming out of my last relationship and into this new one when I was pretty unwilling to be open to anything.”
And yet, the song ends and the conflict is resolved when Michael sings the title for the only time.
Another sign that the song was personal was the fact that George was able to write, record and finish the track all within 8 hours!
That in itself was impressive…but so was the response!
When the single was released from the “Faith” album, “One More Try” became a Top10 hit in 14 countries, reaching #1 in Ireland, Canada, and here in the US, where it topped THREE Billboard Charts: Black Singles, Adult contemporary and Hot 100.
Fun Fact: Elton John was so impressed with the song, he told an interviewer that he wished HE could have written it!
“One More Try”: by George Michael: A very personal Great Song of 1988.
