Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf (1968)

You Might be surprised to learn that Steppenwolf”s 1968 hit, “Magic Carpet Ride” was NOT about drugs…or a hard rock Tale about Arabian Knights.
The music itself seemed to point in those directions–especially with the feedback riff that started the song…but Steppenwolf’s John Kay, twho wrote the lyrics , claimed they were about how good his new Hi-Fi system sounded, while adding imagery about making a wish.

Now, That was John’s story…and he stuck to it–until years later when he admitted some smoke might have been involved. 🙂
But, whatever story you might believe, one thing is certain: “Magic Carpet Ride was hit, reaching #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100!

Over the years, it’s been used in commercials for Miller Genuine Draft Beer, , Chevy Trucks…and even Maxell cassette tapes highlighting how good they sounded.

Gee, I wonder where they got THAT idea. 🙂

Anyway…here’s a fun fact for Trekkers: ln The 1996 film, “Star Trek First Contact,: “”Magic Carpet Ride” was played under the very first warp speed flight by Zephram Cochrane.
“Magic Carpet Ride: A Great Song of 1968–and apparently 2063!
