Love Her Madly by The Doors (1971)
Guitarist Robbie Krieger of The Doors wrote this “Great Song for their “L.A. Woman” album, but there was a problem.
Their producer, Paul Rothschild, (who had worked with the Doors before, as well as Janis Joplin and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band) thought “Love Her Madly” was horrible and said so. He called it “cocktail music,” and when the group insisted upon including it on the album, he flat out quit the project!
Well, to paraphrase the old saying, “The album must go on,”
The Doors decided to self produce ”L.A. Woman,” and release “Love Her Madly” as the first single.
It was the righ move: “Lov Her Madly” became one of the Doors’ biggest hits, reaching #11 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and #3 on Canada’s Top 40. It was also a Top 10 hit in Australia and The Netherlands.
I guess it proves even great producers can make a mistake one in a while. The cocktails are on us, Mr. Rothschild!
