In fact, Barry & Cynthia had written it for The Animals, who turned it down for that very reason.

After all, in ’60s counter culture slang, “”getting your Kicks” definitely implied using illicit substances.

It took a while, but everyone finally figured out the true context of the song, and The Raiders were able to saddle up and ride it to #4 on The Hot 100.
