In Your Room by The Bangles
The Bangles (as a group) were heavily influenced by ’60s music. For example: 1989’s “In Your Room:”
According to Billy Steinberg, who co-wrote the song with Tom Kelly and Susannah Hoffs, The Bangles were, in many ways, a “retro Group.”
With that in mind, they wrote the song to sound like something Tommy James & The Shondells might record.
This includes a strong dose of innuendo (similar to Tommy’s “I Think we’re Alone Now”.) Just listen to the way Susannah sings it.
At the end of he ’80s, a retro song like “In Your Room” easily stuck out amid the rest of the Hot 100…reaching #5 as it crossed into 1990. Ironically, it also climbed to #5 on the MODERN Rock Chart.
I guess you could say it proves that with “In Your Room, everything old was new again–just in time for the ’90s!
