I’m Still Standing” by Elton John (1983)

This week, we’re looking at a Great Song that most people have misinterpreted ever since it was released in 1983.

It’s only natural that “I’m Still Standing” seems like a testament to the resilience of Elton John in the face of adversity…because that’s exactly what it sounds like.

On the other hand…Bernie Taupin, who wrote the song (as well as many of Elton’s other classic hits) , claims it was intended to be a “kiss off” to an old girlfriend.

In other words: “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine…because basically I don’t care anymore.”

Well, that certainly gives the song a different meaning when you listen closely, but either interpretation is fine with Bernie.

Regardless of what people have thought it was about, “I’m Still Standing” became another Elton John classic. When the single was released from the album “Too Low for Zero,” it charted in 11 countries, reaching #1 in Canada and Switzerland. Here at home, it climbed to #12 on Billboard’s Hot 100.”

Kiss off…or testament to resilience: either way, “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John was a Great Song of 1983!
