“If You Wanna Get to Heaven” by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils (1974)
If you wanna form a band that plays Southern Rock, you gotta have a name like The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Then, “If You Wanna Get to Heaven,” you gotta raise a little hell!
That’s about the order it happened, too.
The group formed out of Springfield, Missouri in the early ’70s, and their original name was “Cosmic Corn Cob and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.”
By 1973, they had already dropped the “Corn” and were ready to record their self-titled debut album.
Their very first single release (in late’73) was a foot stompin’ “Great Song” that was the perfect cross between rock, country and bluegrass (Just check out that harmonica solo for proof!)
In early ’74, the song reached #25 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #23 on Canada’s Top 40…but more importantly, it became a gold record, selling well over 500,000 copies, and here in 2025, it remains a Southern Rock classic!
“If You Wanna Get to Heaven” by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils:” a Great Song of 1974!
