“I.G.Y. by (What a Beautiful World) by Donald Fagen (1982)

In 1981, the dynamic duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen–known to music lovers everywhere as Steely Dan–called it quits…which launched Donald into a solo career that paid off rather quickly.

In late 1982, “I.G.Y (What a Beautiful World)”, the first single from Donald’s debut solo album, “The Night Fly” was quickly recognized as a Great Song of the ’80s.

“I.G.Y”refers to the “International Geophysical Year” (of 1957-58), an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world’s scientists…framing post WWII optimism with grand plans for the future– including solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, and permanent space stations.

“What a Beautiful World” reflected that optimism lyrically…and musically, Donald assembled quite a band to to back him up. For example, Jeff Porcaro of Toto was on Drums, The Brecker Brothers provided the trumpet and saxophone, and the background singers included Valerie Simpson–the female half of Ashford and Simpson.

The song reached #8 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart and #2 on the matching Canadian chart…and was Grammy nominated for ‘”Song of the Year!”

1982’s “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” by Donald Fagen: Any song that can deliver such sincere optimism is a Great Song in my book!
