“Green River” by CCR (1969)
Not only did” “Green River” reach #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, it comes with a backstory packed with fun facts!
CCR Frontman John Fogerty was inspired to write the song based on childhood memories of a cabin along Putah Creek near Winters, California that he called Green River after a soft drink he enjoyed as a child.
In fact, the song includes some of John’s most vivid childhood memories –he just switched the location of Green River from California…to the Louisiana bayou.
And here’s the most fun fact of all: In the last verse a character named Old Cody Junior tells John can always come back to Green River. The name is a reference to Buffalo Bill Cody, who at one time, owned the cabin by Putah creek!
