“Good Thing” by Fine Young Cannibals (1989)
Back in 1987, The group Fine Young Cannibals from Birmingham, England was cast as a nightclub band in the film”Tin Men,” starring Richard Dreyfus and Danny DiVito.
As such, one of the songs they wrote for–and performed in the film was “Good Thing.” The song had a “’60s feel” to it, and that was on purpose”since the setting for “Tin Men” was 1960s era Baltimore.
Two years later, “Good Thing” was featured on the group’s album “The Raw and the Cooked,” and was released as a single with tremendous success: charting in 14 countries–including the US, where it topped Billboard’s Hot 100, just missed at #2 on The Rock Chart, and reached #12 on The Adult Contemporary Chart. For the record, it tapped out at #34 in The UK.
And that;s how an ’80s band from Birmingham, England” scored a Great Song in 1989 by playing a ’60s band from Baltimore, Maryland!
