“Gimme Some Lovin'” by The Spencer Davis Group (1966)
Steve Winwood was just 17 years old in 1966 when he wrote “Gimme Some Lovin’ for the UK’s Spencer Davis Group…and according to his brother, bassist Muff Winwood, the song was conceived, arranged, and rehearsed in just half an hour.
At the time, the group was under pressure to come up with a hit…preferably something that would “sell” in America, and the song was a complete success, reaching #7 on the Hot 100. Back in the UK, it climbed to #2.
And here are a couple of fun facts for you: #1: Steve wrote the song on an organ, which explains why the it’s front and center in the mix…and #2: Even though Steve was the lead singer and songwriter, they were called The Spencer Davis Group because the guitarist was the only member of the band who actually enjoyed giving interviews! He eventually became a record company executive.
