“Endless Love” by Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross (1980)

this week’s featured Great Song of the ‘780s…a song that Billboard Magazine once named “The Greatest Duet of All Time.”

“Endless Love” by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross certainly lived up to the accolade.

Lionel wrote it as the theme for the film adaptation of Scott Spencer’s novel of the same name–starring Brooke Shields.

The film was a minor box office hit…but the song took on a life of its own…reaching #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and staying there for NINE STRAIGHT WEEKS! It also topped the Adult Contemporary and Soul Charts.

But there was more to come: “Endless Love” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and won the 1982 American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single.

Fun Fact: ‘Endless Love’ was the biggest-selling single of Diana’s career (including her work with The Supremes!) and her 18th and final number-one single in the US.

Over the years, some notable cover versions have been recorded by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey, (a world wide Top 10 hit in 1994, and by Lionel and Shania Twain (a #1 hit in 2012).
