“Eli’s Coming” by Three Dog Night (1969)
“Eli’s Coming” is one of Three Dog Night’s earliest hits…and definitely a Great Song!
It was was written and originally recorded by singer/songwriter Laura Nyro when she was a teenager…as a warning to a friend (or quite possibly herself) that hooking up with Eli would be not just be a horrible idea, but a painful disaster.
It was a wild song, full of tempo changes and mood swings, and you can check it by clicking the link below.
The late Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, who passed away back on February 2nd, was a huge fan of Laura’s… and loved the song! So much so, he thought it could be a hit for HIS group if the the genders were flipped, the tempos more straightforward, and handed over bandmate Cory Wells to sing lead.
Well, Cory and “third dog” Danny Hutton agreed…and before long, the song was recorded, added to the group’s “Suitable for Framing album,” and released as a single in late 1969 to great success… reaching #10 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and staying in the Top 40 well into January of 1970.
