“Deck the Halls” by Mannheim Steamroller (1984)
Mannheim Steamroller, which actually qualifies as an orchestra, was—and still is—the brainchild of Chip Davis, who named the group after an 18th century German musical technique.
Before Mannheim Steamroller, Chip was an award-winning jingle composer, who was probably best-known as the co-writer of C. W. McCall’s 1975’s hit “Convoy.”
But once he developed his unique blend of classical and rock music, Chip never looked back.
In 1984, Mannhaim Steamroller’s first Christmas album, appropriately titled “Christmas,”opened with a stunning arrangement of “Deck the Halls:” the 16th century Welsh Carol.
Over the years, the album—and the song– have sold more than 3 Million copies…and “Deck the Halls” by Mnheim Steamroller continues to be heard around the world during the Holiday season.
And here’s a personal fun fact for you: Chip Davis and I grew up in the suburbs of Toledo, Ohio. We went to rival high schools and have never met…but every time I hear Mannheim Steamroller, I feel a bit of hometown pride. 🙂
