“Biggest Part of Me” by Ambrosia (1979-80)

I’m cheating a bit with this one…because this 1980 hit SHOULD have been a hit in 1979…but was delayed because the songwriter had second thoughts. Let me explain:

One day in 1979, David Pack, lead singer of the group Ambrosia, was waiting for his family to get ready for a trip, when he realized he left the equipment on in his home studio. When he went to turn it off, inspiration struck, and by the time his family was ready to go 10 minutes later, he had altready written the basic outline of “Biggest Part of Me” and recorded it on tape.

But then, David started to overthink it–especially his lyrics.

He felt the song (about a man who is totally in love with his woman and is looking forward to a long and happy life together, sounded like—in his words–” “a sappy Hallmark Card set to music.”

So he tabled the song until early 1980, when his friend Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers convinced him it would be a hit—and Michael was right!

“Biggest Part of Me” went to #3 on both the Hot 100 and the Adult Contemporary Charts, and better late than never, it became a “hallmark” of Ambrosia’s discography. (Sory, I couldn’t resist! )

Technically, it’s a Great Song of 1979…That’s my story and I’m sticking to it !
