“Aubrey” by Bread (1973)
One of the mellowest groups from the ’70s was Bread.
This week’s featured Great Song of 1973 is not their most well-known, nor was it one of their biggest hits…but it’s a beautiful song just the same.
It was written by lead singer David Gates after he watched the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” He was enamored by Audrey Hepburn’s beauty, and wrote the song with her in mind.
Of course, he didn’t want to be blatant about his crush, so he altered the name of the song slightly…to “Aubrey,” and wrote lyrics about a romance that would never happen. He considers the melody the best he’s ever written.
Although it wasn’t a chart topper, it came very close.
In 1973, it peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Esy Listening Chart, and #15 on The Hot 100, It was also a Top10 hit in Canada and new Zealand.
Aubrey” by Bread: a not-so-very-ordinary girl or name…but definitely a “Great Song of the ’70s!
