All Through the Night by Cyndi Lauper (1984)
In 1983, singer/songwriter Jules Shear wrote and recorded a jaunty little folk rock tune about the excitement that comes with a new romance.
It was produced by Todd Rundgren for “Jules’ “Watchdog” album…and became a Great Song of 1984–.but not by Jules.
He was rather unhappy with Todd’s production of “All Through the Night”…and the song didn’t chart…so he decided to see if someone else might be interested in recording it.
Jules contacted his friend Rick Chertoff…who happened to be Cyndi Lauper’s producer, and when Rick took the song to Cyndi, she not only fell in love with it, she decided to record it for her “True Colors” Album.
She added her unique spin to it…and in a show of class, asked Jules to sing backup–an invitation he happily accepted.
In 1984, “All Through the Night” became the FIFTH top 10 single from “True Colors,” reaching #4 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart an #5 on the Hot 100.
Slant Magazine has called it “one of the greatest pop masterpieces of the ’80s…and it remains one of Cyndi Lauper’s signature songs! – Mike Cook
